Artist's Comments

Here's my entry for :iconmollinda:'s Bee competition [link]
I'll probably keep working on this a bit more since it's still over a month and a half until the deadline and a piece like this doesn't really risk being overworked. It can still do with a bunch more detail and roughening up. Only thing I really need to be carful with is bright colours since they're important in keeping the focus here. Any crits, comments and suggestions of course welcome.
Some elements, most notably the basic shape of the setting, modeled and rendered in Blender [link] . The rest painted in Photoshop.
Used a couple of brushes by David Nagel (a ground cover brush and a canvas texture brush) and John Kearney (hair brushes from an ImagineFX tutorial), but mostly just my own.

edit: There. A bunch of detailing and some atmospheric stuff and I think this one is ready to be submitted. If you want to look a little closer, click download for a somewhat higher res picture.
edit: A small tweak to make use of some suggestions I got on Polykarbon.
edit II: Added some stronger textures. The ground texture is based on a photo I took of the rusty hull of a beached ship, quite heavily painted over.

it looks really good, but of course some retouching is welcome. i think the problem here is that it looks TOO clean... hmm.. you should try to knock off some boulders here and there haha and make the place look old and grungy..

Yes, that's the problem of starting from a 3d render. I've already done a lot of roughening, but it needs more. Takes a bit of time though since I'm working at a higher detail level than I usually do.
:iconbonvillain:
Very nice. I think the composition is good and it's nicely rendered, although I do agree it's a bit too sterile looking. I really like the bee, and the monk isn't bad. I think you might want to tighten him up a bit more, though.

So what'd you do, render it in blender and then do a paint over?
:iconpfors:
Yeah, here's the unaltered render: [link] everything else except some of the flowers are painted on top of that. Gives a starting point and saves me the trouble of having to figure out the perspective of all these curves, but as you say, there's still a bit of work to get rid of the typical cheap 3d render smoothness. Some flowers were also rendered in Blender and then overpainted quite heavily.
I'll see what I can do with the monk. I really need to get more practice at character painting.

I so wanna hug that bee!!! X____X I guess you didn't go for the cow after all :P I like it better this way!

Heh, yeah. I realised that bees, with very few exceptions, aren't carnivorous ;)
:iconsovereign:
Wow that's awesome! I love the bee, great idea. :D
:iconpfors:
Thank you :)
Now with these latest tweaks I'm starting to feel it's almost finished.

This actually made me cry! How pathetic am I!

There is so much emotion in that bee - the pose doesn't say dead, it says defeated and it's just beautifully done.

Like you said, I think the stone work especially needs roughening up. Take a look over on `pendlestock I've got a few textures that may come in handy :aww:

:iconpfors:
Not pathetic at all. That's probably the highest praise I've gotten for my art, ever ^^
I did end up basing the ground texture on a photo, though in the end I used one of my own. It's actually a rust texture, but with a lot of tweaking I think it came out quite nice.
